We fell in love with Lynn's work the moment we
saw “North Shore”. Few artists have captured Hawaii's
beauty, majesty and moods as deftly as Lynn has. We knew we had to have
her paintings on our boxes. Happily she agreed, and has been one of our
biggest supporters. If you would like see more of Lynn Soehner's work
please go to her website (http://www.lynnsoehner.com).
At Malie Kai Chocolates we embrace Hawaii's Spirit of Aloha, which promotes respect and affection for each other
and for the land. We support two organizations that we feel do much to further the Spirit of Aloha - not just
in Hawaii but throughout the world.
PBS (http://www.pbs.org) - Think Globally.
If we are ever to save and preserve the
beautiful places and creatures on this planet, if we are ever to end human conflict and calamities, it will take -
more than anything - education. Television is the most powerful tool for education we have - if it is used right.
PBS does a remarkably good job of bring us information about all facets of the world we live in - largely free of
special-interest bias. We should all support public television.
The Nature Conservancy (http://www.nature.org) - Act Locally.
Education is the ultimate weapon in the fight to save our fragile
planet. Unfortunately, it can be a slow process. Destruction of unique
habitats, their flora and fauna, is happening now – every minute
of every day. And in most cases, when it's gone, it's GONE. The Nature
Conservancy is working to “preserve the plants, animals and
natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by
protecting the lands and waters they need to survive”. We think
they deserve our support.
The Manzanar Project (http://www.themanzanarproject.com)
Low tech solutions to hunger and poverty
The Manzanar Project was conceived by retired cell biologist, Dr. Gordon H. Sato. Its mission is to enable impoverished
people suffering from hunger to produce food and wealth for themselves by utilizing in an innovative way seemingly
unproductive land to grow mangrove trees – an excellent sustainable source of food for livestock. The Manzanar
Project is using Eritrea's inter-tidal coastal area for mangrove farming. The leaves, tender shoots and seeds of the
mangrove trees can be fed to goats and sheep to substantially increase their numbers. What is so radical about this
approach is that is uses land that is unsuitable for any other kind of agriculture and seawater to produce food.
Dr. Sato was given the Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2002 for his innovative work. He was also awarded the 2005 Asahi Glass Foundation's Blue Planet Prize for his efforts to solve global environmental problems.
The Manzanar Project is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
organization. It receives minimal support from the government of
Eritrea. If you would like to help support the Project please send your
tax-deductible donation to
